Thackray Medical Museum 2024

Year 11 History students recently spent a day at the Thackray Medical Museum, Leeds as part of their revision around the GCSE 'Britain: Health and the People' topic. Over three days, the students were given the opportunity to take part in a 19th century surgery workshop which allowed them the opportunity to witness, handle and even smell the experience of being part of an early 19th-century operating theatre. As well as this, the students were able to step back in time to walk down a 19th century Leeds street in order to investigate the terrible state of public health at this time and why improvements in this area were an absolute must.

To round off the day, each class was then guided around the museum by their class teachers to allow them the chance to examine the medical items and developments that they'd, up until that point only studied through a textbook. All in all the students gained a great deal from the experience, which puts them in a confident position leading into their summer history exams.
