Thackray Museum of Medicine 25

Year 11 history students have recently attended the Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds as part of their revision for the 'Medicine in Britian' GCSE exam. Over the course of three days the students were involved in workshops on 'medical pioneers of the First World War' which involved a hands-on approach to examining actual items emphasising the surgical and medical developments during the war. The students were also guided around the museum by their history teachers to investigate the problems and solutions of poor Victorian public health by visiting a recreation of a Leeds street from the period. Some students were also able to examine the shocking realities of a 19th century operation by sitting in a mock up of an operating theatre of the time. All students behaved impeccably and were a credit to themselves and the school. We hope that the visit achieves its aim of giving the students something to think about as they begin their GCSE History revision journeys.
