Music (Applied General)
Why choose this subject?
Music in Post 16 at Immanuel College is all about honing your musical and technical skills and becoming a confident performer.
Students will gain experience in a variety of musical genres and styles before deciding on an area of performance specialisation. They will explore the Music Industry, Music Theory and Harmony, Music Software and apps, together with performance, both solo and in ensembles.
Music is not a 9-5 job so not all of your study may be in school time. You may have rehearsals after school or be required to attend evening events.
What will you study?
Practical Music Theory & Harmony
- 25% of the qualification
- Learn how to compose, arrange and perform Music in a range of genres and styles.
Professional Practice in the Music Industry
- 25% of the qualification
- Investigate how the Music industry works and how to effectively manage a career in Music.
Ensemble Music Performance
- 25% of the qualification
- Performance work exploring a choice of pieces, set by the exam board, working as an ensemble with other
musicians.
Option Unit
- 25% of the qualification
- Most students will undertake Unit 6 Solo Performance preparing a showcase of around 8 minutes or more on their chosen instrument/voice.
How is this course assessed?
The BTEC Music programme is assessed through a combination of practical tasks supported by written assignments, which demonstrate the development of skills.
Music Intent
Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
Through perseverance students are encouraged to develop musical skills and knowledge through performing, composing and listening across a broad range of genres, styles, and traditions3.
Students will nurture academic habits to develop their ability to analyse, create and seek inspiration from a range of composers and musicians in a variety of styles, genres and traditions using different musical structures, developing character. Our curriculum prepares students to be well rounded individuals and to stretch themselves spiritually, morally and imaginatively through creative investigations. The music curriculum foster confidence, creativity and individual skills students will play and perform confidently in a range of solo and ensemble contexts using their voice, playing instruments musically, fluently and with accuracy and expression3.
Our curriculum provides a foundation for students to pursue their hopes and aspirations through further education on their own creative journey including opportunities to visit Higher Education Institutions and working with industry professionals, giving hope8. Spirituality and creativity through understanding and exploring how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations. To encourage students to be creative learners both in and out of the classroom through homework and extra-curricular activities9

What next?
Our Music alumni have great independent learning and team-work skills sought after by many universities. Many of our former students have progressed to a degree course in Music, Sound Engineering or Performing Arts. Possible Apprenticeships could include Music Production, Instrument Technician, or Marketing and Promotions Apprenticeship for a Record Company.
