Sport (Applied General)
Why choose this subject?
Over the course of two years, students studying BTEC Sport will gain a greater understanding of how the body enables sport professionals to perform sports at an elite level. Students will understand what happens to the body when we start to exercise and the effects of long-term physical activity and training on the body.
Students will also analyse the impact of lifestyle choices, such as alcohol consumption and smoking on an individual’s health, fitness and well-being and provide recommendations on how to improve their lifestyle. BTEC Sport wouldn’t be a Sport course without a practical element and students will get the opportunity to showcase their skills, techniques and tactics in two sports of their choice and analyse their performance in both sports.

Physical Education Intent
At Immanuel College we believe that Physical Education has a vital role to play in developing students spiritually, socially, emotionally and intellectually7.
Physical Education teaches students so much more than simply how to play a variety of sports, through perseverance it develops skills such as leadership, communication, co-operation, independence, respect, fairness and acceptance of responsibility; developing the character and skills that are needed in order to thrive in modern life6. We believe that all students should leave Immanuel College with a positive attitude towards physical activity and the motivation to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Our curriculum provides hope that we inspire the next generation of gym-goers, amateur football players, netball payers and cyclists and enable them to understand the benefits of leading such a lifestyle and the effect it can have on a person’s physical, social and mental health9.
6 Psalm 24:1– ‘The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it’
7 Ephesians 2:10 – ‘For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.’
9 John 10:10 – Jesus said, ‘I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly.’
